Thanjavur is a municipality and the headquarters of the district and a very important center of South Indian art and architecture. We can see most of the great Chola Temples in and around Thanjavur and the greatest is the Bragatheeswarar Temple. It is also an important agricultural center, viz. “Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu”.

Thanjavur has over 90 Temples among with Bragatheeswarar Temple stands first which has been built by the King Rajaraja Chola I. The walls of the Temple are covered with numerous inscriptions recording his conquests and endowments to enormous number of charities. The domination of Rajaraja Chola began to vanish while Rajendra Chola I started building a new city by name “Gangaikonda Cholapuram” where he moved his capital. A mighty Canon was built when Raghunatha Nayak ruled Thanjavur and it has been located at the defense barricade at the eastern entrance of the city.

The community of the Salesians of Don Bosco arrived at Thanjavur in 1906 and started an Industrial School. It is now in the premises of St. Anthony’s Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
