RAMANATHAPURAM - City Revisited

Ramanathapuram is a City and a Municipality as well and also known as ‘Ramnad’ in short. This is an administrative headquarters of Ramanathapuram District situated in Tamil Nadu.

TOURISM:

The people visiting Ramanathapuram use to see the Raja Palace which exists still and is maintained by the former Sethupathi Raja and his family. Ramanathapuram is situated near Rameshwaram and Devipattinam which are considered to be famous pilgrimage centers. As there are a number of Temples, the tourists also pay a visit to these places while coming to Ramanathapuram.

HISTORICAL EVIDENCE:

In the early days of 1520, the Nayaks of Vijayanagar Empire and the Sethupathis took this area under their control and later due to family disputes it has resulted in division of Ramanathapuram. In 1730, Chanda Shahib of Karnataka captured Ramanathapuram and the British supported this. In the year 1910, Ramanathapuram was formed from portions of Madurai and Tirunelveli Districts and named as “Ramnad”. Later it was renamed in Tamil as “Ramanathapuram”. It is to be noted that our former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam did his shooling at Schwartz Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram.

TRANSPORT:

Ramanathapuram is situated on the south east of Tamil Nadu and connected by NH49. This road connects Kochi to Rameswaram and the road NH210 connects Tiruchirapalli and Ramanathapuram. The East Coast Road is the major coastal road of Tamil Nadu which connects Ramanathapuram with Chennai, Pondicherry, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. Ramanathapuram can also be reached by railroads from the major cities of Indian through Madurai and Tiruchirapalli Junctions. The nearest Airport is in Madurai and frequent flights are there to all major cities of India.

The Nilgri Hills consist of a range of mountains with 24 peaks situated over 2000 meters above the sea level. It is located in the western part of Tamil Nadu at the borders of Karnataka and Kerala States. In 1827 Ooty became the Sanatorium and the summer capital. KANYAKUMARI - Tourist places & shopping spots

Kanyakumari is a town located at the southernmost end of the Indian Peninsula. It is also called “Cape Comorin” and a most popular tourist place in India. The beauty of the town is that the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet in one place and the pilgrims are taking a holy dip in it. The closest major cities are viz.
