Kanchipuram is the oldest city of Tamil Nadu and comes under municipal corporation limits. It is also the birth place of Sri C.N.Annadurai, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. It was a city of learning for Tamil, Sanskrit and Pali and was the capital of the Pallavas. Pallava Mahendravarman I was a man of intelligence and a great Sanskrit satirist and play writer. The Ekambaranadhar temple tower which rises up to 192 feet and the 100 pillar mandapam in Varadharaja Perumal Temple are the attractions of the visitors. The British man Robert Clive offered an emerald necklace which still decorates the Lord Varadharaja Perumal. The city is an important place of pilgrimage for Buddhists, Jains and Hindus.
SILK CITY:
While Kanchipuram is known for its enormous Temples, it is also known for its handloom industries. As the main profession of the people is weaving, Kanchipuram is called the “Silk City” and more than 40,000 children are employed in these industries. The Director Mr. Priyadarshan made a Tamil Film “Kanchivaram” about silk weavers and it got the Best Film Award also.
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS:
Kanchipuram is also a place of learning and several Institutions offer different courses in Engineering, Arts & Science and Medicine. Meenakshi Medical College and the Research Institute are Institutions of importance.
