SALEM - About the city

Salem is a City and Corporation situated in the north central part of Tamil Nadu. It has a beautiful look with hills almost all sides of the City including the tourist spot of Yercaud. The Kiliyur Water Falls and Kavery Peak are more feathers added to the natural beauty of Salem. The four hills that surround Salem are the Nagaramalai in the north, the Jarugumalai in the south, the Kanjamalai in the west and the Godumalai in the east. In short the city lies in the middle of Kongu Nadu.

ENTERTAINMENT IN CINE FIELD:

Salem had a name for the number of cinema theatres when compared to other cities. It had 28 theatres once which showed all types of films but currently 15 theatres only remain. The movie studio Modern Theatres Limited was established in 1935 and almost 150 movies had been produced through this. Rathna Studio was another familiar movie studio in Salem which produced films and made available for rent for other film makers.

YERCAUD:

Yercaud is the main hill station as a picnic spot in Salem located 5000 feet high above the sea level. It is famous for coffee plantations and orange groves. Servarayan Temple is in the highest point of Yercaud and hence it is also named as “Shevaroy Hills”. Yercaud is also called the “Poor Man’s Ooty”. The visiting spots in Yercaud are the Kiliyur Water Fall, Pagoda Point & View of Salem City at night, Boating Lake, Lake View in Yercaud and the Coffee Plantations.

HEALTH CARE:

A new Super Specialty Hospital is under way being funded jointly by the Central Health Ministry and the State Government apart from enormous private hospitals in Salem.
