The Nilgri Hills consist of a range of mountains with 24 peaks situated over 2000 meters above the sea level. It is located in the western part of Tamil Nadu at the borders of Karnataka and Kerala States. In 1827 Ooty became the Sanatorium and the summer capital. The mountain railway of the Nilgris was completed by the Madras Government.

PLANTATIONS:
It is a wonder that no other Hill Stations, other than the Nilgris, has so many exotic species. We can see over 2700 species of flowering plants, 160 species of fern and fern allies, enormous types of flowerless plants, mosses, fungi, algae, land lichens are found in Nilgris. There is an access of extensive commercial planting and harvesting of eucalyptus, wattle plantations and cattle grazing as well. The plants of the Nilgris include some vulnerable species also.
MUDUMALAI NATIONAL PARK:
This is the wonderful spot for the tourists. The Nilgris can be reached by the Mountain Railway and by motor vehicles. There is a suggestion that the beauty of the Nilgris can be enjoyed by trekking its slopes.
NILGIRI MOUNTAIN RAILWAY:
The mountain railway was operated by the Madras Railway Company earlier and it relies on its fleet of steam locomotives. The train covers a distance of about 42 kms including 208 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. The uphill journey takes around 5 hours and the downhill journey takes 4 hours. While traveling, the visitors will have spectacular views of the Nilgiri Hills. The train starts from Mettupalayam and stops in between for passengers’ refreshment. Coonoor is the main intermediate station and the intervening stations are Wellington, Aruvankadu, Ketti, Lovedale and the train reaches Ooty.
There is no doubt that the visitors of the Nilgris will have an exciting moment while in the Hills with an extraordinary chill climate.
