Madurai is the oldest and prestigious city of Tamil Nadu which is located on the banks of the river Vaigai. It is the second largest city and called the ‘Temple City’. It is also called ‘Koodal Maanagar’, ‘Kalaachaara Thalainagar’, ‘Malligai Maanagar’, ‘Thoonga Nagaram’ and ‘Thiruvizha Nagaram’. 

With all its fame, Madurai remains the most important and popular city of South Tamil Nadu that is surrounded by Thirumangalam, Thiruparankundram, Melur, Aaniyur and Avaniyapuram Municipalities.

Madurai’s centre of attraction is the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple and some of the streets around the Temple are named after the Tamil month’s viz. Another reward for the city of Madurai is that its High Court includes the Districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli and Karur.
